When You Don't Know What to Do, Try This

With all of the events of the past two years what I’m hearing most from my clients is that they are exhausted. All of the effort of trying to stay positive and grounded in a world that is drastically out of balance is draining. I’ve even heard from people who are big yoga “influencers” saying they have reached the bottom of their energy barrel. Some have even gone offline for a break.

So what can we do when there is nothing left?

Pray.

At least that’s what I do when I’ve done all of the things I normally do to stay balanced, and things still feel a bit wonky.

I am not religious. I would describe myself as highly spiritual, but I am not affiliated with any form of institutionalized religion. Still, I see the great value in prayer and I’m glad there are institutions that provide a formalized way of tapping into this source of hope and faith.

At the time of writing this blog, the Ukraine is in the fourth week of the invasion by Russian troops. Ottawa has just recently been freed from an occupation of the downtown core by those opposing COVID mandates and we are marking over two years of constant, low grade stress related to this global pandemic. This is a LOT to manage. So if you’re feeling like you just don’t have any more happy juice, it’s understandable!

Never the less, we have to carry on. The question is, how do we find more fuel when it feels like our source is dried up? Much of the time I feel like I’m doing okay. I do prioritize my walks in nature, yoga, pranayama and meditation and that is what enables me to cope for the most part. But, there are times when I feel a sense of fear and doom that drains me. That’s when I pray.

The main idea is to open to a higher form of energy. I know that sounds ethereal, but there’s no other way to explain it. You can also tap into higher forms of energy through meditation but to me, the subtle difference is prayer is more like a direct “ask” for help, whereas meditation is often more of a focus on an outcome you desire. Both are very useful in slightly different ways.

Give it a Try

The prayer for peace below was shared by Marie Forleo, who is a coach for entrepreneurs (one of my coaches) and always has great suggestions for “living a life you love.”

Dear [God, Divine Spirit, Mother Earth, Wisdom Goddess, Heavenly Father...or another opening]

We ask for your divine strength and wisdom at this time. We pray for peace and the protection of all beings. We pray a higher consciousness prevails. May your love lift us, lead us, and heal us so that we may become vessels of your grace. Please open our hearts, guide our thinking, shape our actions, and bring forth the miracle of peace.

[Amen/Namaste/A-ho/Miigwech or another closing.]

I wish you continued strength and courage, hope and faith as we continue to face the challenges of life.

=)
